QCTC announces 10th season!

Kristian Wedolowski

Queen City Theatre Company is excited to announce its 10th season in Charlotte, NC! The theatre company founded in 2007 by Glenn T. Griffin and Kristian Wedolowski performs as a resident company at the Duke Energy Theatre @ Spirit Square with the mission of presenting theatre that celebrates the many different races, religions, gender identities and sexual orientations that exist in Charlotte, NC and the world. With its 10th season, QCTC continues to create theatre that explores the human experience and challenges audiences with innovative and groundbreaking staging of new works and theatre classics.

“While putting together our 10th season, I wanted it to be a tribute to our best works and the connection we established with our audiences” says Artistic Director Glenn T. Griffin. The concept of the season is to look back as we go forward, an exploration of different times in our human evolution. QCTC’s 10th season is bigger and better than ever, exploring new themes and genres, but always encouraging and celebrating diversity of thought, inclusion and acceptance. Each piece looks at who we were and who we are, and also where we are going as people and society. Have we changed for the better or do we keep repeating the same mistakes over and over again? We will bring our audiences through a journey of laughter and emotions as we together, for 10 years in a row, keep enjoying the unique form of art that is live theatre. Come join us!

Tickets for QCTC’s 10th Season go on sale July 2016 – for more information contact us through our website www.queencitytheatre.com

August 2016 – “PS... YOUR CAT IS DEAD” by James Kirkwood Jr. (Aug 25th – Sep 4th 2016)

The concept is very simple, or so we like to think: It's New Year's Eve in New York City. You've been robbed twice, your girlfriend is leaving you, you've lost your job...and the only one left to talk to is the gay burglar trying to seduce you and you've got tied up in the kitchen... P.S. your cat is dead. The extremely successful classic play arrives to Charlotte after worldwide acclaim with a new, innovative, hilarious and yes, revealing staging.

February 2017 – “AN ACT OF GOD” by David Javerbaum (Feb 2nd – Feb 11th 2017)

“Sinfully funny. A divine comedy”- Vanity Fair

The Broadway hit comes to the Queen City! The One with the first and last word on everything has finally arrived to set the record straight and whilst he is at it, deliver a new and improved set of Commandments. After many millennia, and in just 90 minutes, God (assisted by His devoted angels) answers some of the deepest existential questions and mysteries that have plagued mankind since Creation. Currently playing on Broadway, and based on a satirical book and twitter account, AN ACT OF GOD is the conversation you always wanted to have and one of the most anticipated shows of the season!

“The jokes keep landing—nearly one per sentence”—New York Magazine.

“90 Heavenly Minutes” – Time Out NY

April 2017 – “THE PRIDE” by Alexi Kaye Campbell's (Apr 27th – May 6th 2017)

In the controversial and groundbreaking Off-Broadway and West End hit THE PRIDE, Philip, Oliver and Sylvia exist in a complex love triangle, which spans over half a century, living and loving simultaneously in 1958 and the present against a background of changing attitudes towards homosexuality. In 1958 Philip is married to Sylvia but finds himself falling in love with another man. His refusal to acknowledge his true nature leads both him and the people he loves to a devastating conclusion. In 2008, Oliver is addicted to anonymous sexual encounters. Forced to make a choice between promiscuity and monogamy, he has to ask himself fundamental questions on the nature of intimacy and identity.  Past and present worlds grind together and melt apart, yet the future and its promise of sexual liberation remains ever elusive.

"An illuminating, moving night of theatre." —Time Out London.

August 2017 – "THE NANCE" by Douglas Carter Beane (Aug 3rd – Aug 12th 2017)

From the acclaimed writer of the award winning Broadway shows Xanadu, Little Dog Laughed and Sister Act, QCTC brings the regional premiere of his latest work, THE NANCE. In the 1930s, burlesque impresarios welcomed the hilarious comics and musical parodies of vaudeville to their decidedly lowbrow niche. A headliner called "the nance"—usually played by a straight man—was a stereotypically camp homosexual and master of comic double entendre. THE NANCE recreates the naughty, raucous world of burlesque's heyday at a time when it was easy to play gay and dangerous to actually be gay, as we follow Chauncey Miles and his fellow performers on and off stage. Equal parts musical, drama and comedy, the groundbreaking this is a show you can’t miss!

"A heartfelt new play set in the twilight of burlesque." —The New York Times. "

Our season opener, The Money Shot by Neil Labute fresh off its Off-Broadway run brings a sexy, daring and darkly hilarious comedy like you've never seen before. One of the most anticipated shows of the year!

We continue in November 2015 with Birds of a Feather by Marc Acito, based on the true story of Roy and Silo, the two Central Park Zoo gay penguins who partnered, adopted and egg, hatched and raised a chick together. In 2005, they were the subject of the widely contested children's book, And Tango Makes Three banned in several states from the school system. Winner of the 2012 Helen Hayes award for Best New Play.

In February 2016 QCTC brings yet one more Regional Premiere to the stage with Harvey Fierstein's Tony nominated Casa Valentina. From the creator of La Cage Aux Folles, Kinky Boots and Torch Song Trilogy, comes this touching comedy of white-collar professionals who discreetly escape their families to spend their weekends safely inhabiting their chosen female alter-egos. Based on real events and infused with Fierstein's trademark wit, this moving, insightful and delightfully entertaining show offer a glimpse into the lives of this group of "self-made women" looking for acceptance and happiness in their very own Garden of Eden.

Our incredible season closes in May 2016 with the long awaited premiere of Heathers - The Musical (Kevin Murphy/Laurence O'Keefe)! Based on the cult classic 1989 film, Westerberg High is ruled by a shoulder-padded, scrunchie-wearing clique: Heather, Heather and Heather, the hottest and cruelest girls in all of Ohio. But misfit Veronica Sawyer rejects their evil regime for a new boyfriend, the dark and sexy stranger J.D., who plans to put the Heathers in their place - six feet under. Heathers - The Musical is a hilarious, heartfelt and homicidal new show based on the greatest teen comedy of all times!

We hope to see you soon at the Duke Energy Theatre to enjoy one more season of exciting entertainment with Queen City Theatre Company!
